The Project

The SportsDay TALK app is one of the many innovative digital experiences offered by the Dallas Morning News. The app allows sports lovers to access live broadcasts, read local sports articles, follow news updates on local teams, listen to podcasts, stay up-to-date on scores and more.

Originally launched in 2012, the SportsDay TALK app needed an updated look and a technical upgrade to enhance its reliability. We were tasked with reimagining the role that mobile could play in the consumption of audio content and uncovering new opportunities to develop a deeper and richer experience for users.

Giving a New Face to an Old App

It’s always great to work on an app with a validated purpose and a passionate user base who know what they want. To kick things off with the Dallas Morning News, we took a deep dive into the original SportsDay TALK App analytics and studied user feedback in the form of reviews. This research armed us with insights into what the original app was lacking and what we needed to build to satisfy sports fans.

One of the first things we needed to update was the app’s overall look and feel. The original SportsDay TALK App was built for a different era in terms of design, and the old look was begging for a refresh.

We started by identifying brand colors and tones along with designing a new logo and icon. Both MindSea and the Dallas Morning News recognized the importance of creating an app icon that could be easily identified. In a world where most people have more than 10 apps installed on their phones, it’s critical for apps to have an eye-catching icon that stands out. We also recognized that it was time to give the SportsDay TALK logo a makeover that could be used for years to come.

Adding Simplicity, Subtracting Clutter

If you've ever used a mobile app, you know that the easier to use, the better. Going into this project, a key priority for us was subtracting the clutter from the original app and simplifying it to create a great experience. We started by building wireframes that removed unnecessary design elements and put key features front and centre.

Introducing The New Look, To The New Interface

After bringing the new logo and brand guidelines to life, we injected the new look and feel into a quality interface. The primary reason sports fans use the SportsDay TALK app is to listen to live sports radio while working, driving or doing things around house.

We used this insight to ensure that users could listen to the radio while browsing other functions within the app or using their device for something else entirely.

Adding Functionality Without Sacrificing Data

One of the most requested features in the user feedback we studied was the ability to pause and rewind the live radio broadcast at any time. Building this functionality was a challenge, but one that our technical team was able to tackle head-on without eating into users’ data.

Not only did the Dallas Morning News team want to find ways to give more value to their listeners, they also wanted to give more value to their advertising customers. We worked with the team to uncover creative ways to monetize the app.

We helped build a beautiful app that became one of the highest rated apps in the industry. The team at the Dallas Morning News continues to innovate within the media space and consistently refers to the SportsDay TALK app as a benchmark for what a successful product launch looks like.
